The two types of chiropractors; straight and mixers

You might have heard of these two terms used when referring to chiropractors in Overland Park. One might be a little confused about the difference between the two. Both these parties are chiropractors who believe in aspects of using some techniques to manipulate the nervous and muscular system so as to achieve healing. The difference between these two groups is simple really; one of them is an old school of thought while the other is new school with modern ideas and techniques incorporated. Let’s explore the characteristics of these chiropractors and see how different or similar they are.

Straight chiropractors

These are basically the old school chiropractors. They follow the original teachings of the father of chiropractic D.D Palmer which were laid out more than a century ago. Palmer insisted on the human vertebrae being the gateway to cure any disease. This was based on the belief that all diseases experienced by a human being stem from a problem in the spinal column. These “problems” in the vertebrae are referred to as subluxations. There are a number of techniques aimed at detecting the subluxations and removing them from the body. A small fraction of chiropractors are straight chiropractors; about one sixth of all chiropractors are straights.

What do straights believe in?

Straight chiropractors believe that subluxations are the root of all illnesses. Palmer talked of the body being a vessel of innate intelligence flowing throughout the body with the neural system being the channel. The subluxations interfere with the innate intelligence and have to be removed in order. This approach is good except for the fact that diagnosis is ignored. Diagnosis and disease treatment are thrown out of the window since the cause of all illness is the subluxations. Straight are knowledgeable in the spinal column, all bones in the spine and articulations in the column. They are also very practical as they can narrow down to the cause of the problem without x ray exams or MRI scans.

Mixers

Mixers are usually the new school chiropractors. They are the majority and consist of more than 80 percent of all the chiropractors in the world. Chiropractors who are mixers have embraced the modern scientific methods of diagnosis and treatment. Mixers know that some diseases are caused by bacteria and other pathogens. This prompts them to conclude subluxations are just barriers t the body’s defense system. The lowered resistance to disease makes the body vulnerable and prone to contracting disease.

Which concepts have been adopted by mixers?

A mixer usually incorporates other alternative forms of medicine and techniques into their usual treatment program. This is the concept of being a “mixer”. Some of the techniques which have been borrowed by mixers include; massage, nutritional vitamins and supplements e.g vitamin supplements, naturopathy, and also some old Chinese treatment methods. They also encourage the use of imaging technology to diagnose a medical condition.
